UDS Medical School Hosts The Ghana Surgical Research Society Meeting

The UDS Medical School played host to the Ghana Surgical Research Society Meeting which came off on 12th August 2023 at the Nim Avenue Hotel in Tamale. The meeting brought together Surgeons, Non-Surgicak Specialists, Anaesthesiologists, Anaesthetics, Peri-Operative Nurses, Doctors and Administrators from the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Northern Regional Hospital, SDA Hospital, Savelugu Hospital, Tamale Technical University Hospital, Malshegu Health Center among others.

The meeting was under the theme “The Persistent Nemesis in Modern Surgery”.

The Dean of the UDS Medical School, Prof. Stephen Tabiri reminded the medical professionals about the ethics of their profession and the need to adhere to ethical standards.

Prof. Tabiri nudged the medical professionals on the need to address surgical side infections.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Francis Atindana Abantanga made emphasised the need to for medical practitioners to constantly change their surgical gloves and other equipment in order to eliminated cases of infection before, during and after surgical operations.

Prof. Abantanga said in order to save patients staying for long periods of times at the various health centers and hospitals, medical practitioners should make it a point to adhere to strict procedures when working on cases in the surgical theatre.

Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare appealed to managers of medical facilities to properly manage the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to ensure that there is enough for all medical professionals.

“Doctors must make sure that the supplies must be stored well. This is what we can all do to make sure of the appropriateness, right time, and the right amount of its use. The Government will ensure that the PPEs are provided” he added.

Other partners at the meeting included the University for Development Studies, NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery and the University of Birmingham.

Other guests were Northern Regional Directors of Health, A.g. Director of Health Ghana Health Service, Clinical Care Ghana Health Service, Municipal Directors of Health Sagnarigu and Savelugu.
