New SRC Executives Pay Courtesy Call on Vice-Chancellor Prof. Seidu Al-hassan

The Students Representative Council (SRC) on September 15, 2022, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Seidu Alhassan in his office at the Central Administration Block in Tamale. The purpose of the visit was to introduce themselves to the Vice Chancellor. The visit was led by the President of the Student Representative Council, Mr. Abdul Mugis Musah and past SRC executives that handed over to him on the same day.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to students’ welfare and admonished the student leaders to endeavor to put themselves at the forefront of service to the nation. He advised them to strive for excellence at all times. Underscoring the importance of students in the University, Professor Seidu Al-hassan stated “as far as I remain the Vice Chancellor of the University, Students would remain the center of teaching, learning and research”. “Students are the anchor of every tertiary institution and the progress of the institution is measured by the way it handles its students” the Vice Chancellor added. He advised the student leaders to strive to create a peaceful environment around them at all times.

Earlier the same day, at the PWD conference room, the 2021/2022 SRC/NUGS Executives, at a short ceremony, handed over to the newly elected executives of the central SRC. The ceremony which was chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Felix K. Abagale, also saw in attendance, the Dean of Students, Dr. Musah Alhassan, the Vice Dean of Students, Dr. Linda Dari, Head of the Counselling Unit, Alhaji Alhassan Hussein, Hall Masters and Senior Assistant Registrars of the University from both Nyankpala and Tamale Campuses. The Pro-Vice Chancellor urged the newly sworn leaders to serve with integrity, sincerity and loyalty.

He cautioned them against any plans to create illegal accounts for the purposes of collecting moneys from students without following the right procedures. He further advised them to strive to find a fair balance between their work as student leaders and their academic work.

Prof Abagale declared that, management would not interfere in the affairs of students unless the need arises for management to protect the entire student body from any predatory leadership that do not have the interest of students as its core business.

He advised the new student leaders to come up with policies and programmes that seek to help the University grow rather than focus their attention entirely on funfair and other entertainment events.
For his part, the SRC President, Mr. Abdul Mugis Musah, on behalf of his colleagues pledged to serve with honesty and openness, emphasising that the student body will contribute to ensuring that there is adequate provision of teaching and learning materials.

He further thanked the erstwhile executives for the smooth transition of power and promised to work hard to build on the good works they had started.
