UDS School Of Medicine Snatches 3rd Place At The 10th Inter-Medical School Public Speaking Competition

The UDS school of medicine won the third position in the just ended 10th edition of the Inter-Medical School Public Speaking Competition organised by the Ghana Mental Health Authority on Nov. 28, 2023.

Out of the seven participating schools who shared their thoughts on the topic: “The Appropriateness of Telemedicine and Technology in Mental Health Delivery: Pros and Cons”, the UDS School of Medicine came 3rd with 85 points after the University Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the University of Cape Coast with 86 points and 88 points respectively.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Mental Health Authority, Professor Adjoa Pinaman said the competition was an excellent way to attract the attention of the general public to issues regarding psychiatry.

She appealed to corporate bodies and philanthropic individuals for more sponsorship to ensure the sustainability of the competition in subsequent years. She added that if sustained, the competition could help to reduce the deficit of mental health professionals in the country. Prof Pinaman encouraged the medical students to develop interests in, and consider a possible career option in mental health.

The Medical Director of St. Patrick Mental Health Services, Professor Paul Fearon expressed the hope that the competition would provide an enabling platform for medical students to whip up their interest in mental health. Mrs Belinda Agyapong while presenting a statement on behalf of the sponsors, praised the local organising committee and participants in the competition.
